Want to Rewire Your Brain for Joy?
A simple daily habit that can change everything.
Have you ever noticed how, when you’re in a bad mood, everything seems to pile on? You spill coffee on your shirt, someone cuts you off in traffic, and then your phone battery dies just when you need it most. It’s like your whole day conspires to confirm how you already feel.
There’s actually a reason for that.
Your brain has a filter system called the Reticular Activating System (RAS). Its job is to scan the world for evidence of what you believe or expect. So if you anticipate negativity, your brain will look for and amplify the bad. Eugh, not helpful! But if you intentionally cultivate gratitude, your brain will rewire itself to scan for goodness instead.
And here’s the beautiful thing: you can train it.
Studies show that practicing daily gratitude:
✔️ Increases dopamine + serotonin (your brain’s “happiness chemicals”)
✔️ Strengthens neural pathways for optimism (hooray!)
✔️ Lowers stress + anxiety
✔️ Improves sleep, relationships, and emotional resilience
Neuroscience confirms what Scripture has been telling us all along. Paul writes in 1 Thessalonians 5:16–18:
✔️ Rejoice always
✔️ Pray continually
✔️ Give thanks in all circumstances
Notice he doesn’t say “give thanks when you feel grateful.” Gratitude isn’t just a feeling—it’s a choice. And repeated choices can build into habits. And like any habit, the more you practice it, the stronger it gets.
So this week, I want to invite you to start small. Before you go to bed each night, write down three things you’re grateful for. (Writing them down helps your RAS know what to be looking for the next day—the good stuff.) They don’t have to be big or impressive. It could be a warm cup of tea, a text from a friend, or the way the light hit the trees on your morning walk.
As you keep doing this, you’ll begin to notice a shift. The more you focus on God’s goodness, the more you’ll see it—because He’s always at work, even when life feels messy.
So, I’d love to know. What are you thankful for today?
Praying that gratitude will open your eyes to God’s presence in brand-new ways this week,
Em

I've been using a new app called Gratitude Plus (the free version). It sends me a notification to help me remember to be grateful during the day. I have it set to remind me to list 3 things to express gratitude for at 8PM. Its become part of my end of day routine. Its been super helpful. Its really taking hold and I find myself making mental notes through the day of things I can express gratitude for.
I'm grateful for the community I live in.
