Stuck in a negative thought spiral? Here's how to break free.
Your thoughts are NOT the boss of you.
Hi friends,
Ever found yourself stuck in a loop of negative thinking—replaying the same fears, regrets, or self-doubts over and over again?
Maybe it’s the voice that says, “You’re not good enough.”
Or the fear that whispers, “This will never get better.”
It’s exhausting. But it’s not random.
Neuroscience shows us that repetition strengthens neural pathways—so the more often we think a thought, the easier it becomes to think it again. Our brains love efficiency, so they default to the familiar, even when the familiar is fear.
But here’s the good news: You’re not stuck.
You can interrupt the cycle. You can renew your mind.
Paul gives us a powerful battle plan in 2 Corinthians 10:5:
“Take every thought captive and make it obedient to Christ.”
Here’s what that can look like in real life:
Recognise it.
Start by noticing the thought. Don’t let it run unchecked. Catch it before it gains momentum.Replace it.
Don’t just try to not think the negative—speak truth over it.
Example: “I’m failing” becomes “God’s grace is sufficient for me.”
“I’m alone” becomes “God will never leave me or forsake me.”Repeat the truth.
Repetition doesn’t just strengthen fear—it can also build faith. Speak God’s Word until it becomes your new default.
This isn’t wishful thinking. It’s spiritual warfare and neural rewiring.
You are not powerless over your thoughts. With God’s help, you can redirect them, rewire your brain, and create a new normal—one rooted in faith, not fear.
So here’s the challenge:
What’s one lie you’re choosing to replace with truth today?
You’re not alone in this. We’re rewiring and renewing together.
With hope,
Em
So on point, and so glad you also included neuroscience. So timely thank you as always.
When I heard about this a few years ago and started using this pattern - recognize, confess, speak truth over the lie, and frankly stayed in God’s Word out of a desperate need to KNOW the truth to speak!!! - I finally started to heal. And like any good physician, He continues to heal me, revealing to me more lies, more areas where I need healing so that I can bring those to him and bind the lies with a covering of Truth.
I just recalled where I first heard this! Matt Tommey. One of his books, I think!
