Moving Forward? Don’t Go Without This One Thing
How to Step Into What’s Next Without Losing the Most Important Guide
Lately, I’ve been watching Grey’s Anatomy (because who doesn’t love a good hospital drama?), and one particular episode stuck with me. A patient died on the operating table because the Resident didn’t wait for the Surgeon to arrive. The subordinate believed that because they’d seen the master perform the surgery before, they could do it alone—without the presence of the Surgeon.
Moses knew all too well the danger of moving forward without the Master:
"If your Presence does not go with us, do not send us up from here."
Exodus 33:15 NIV
Despite being the leader of the Israelites, Moses understood that success wasn’t found in his own abilities, experience, or authority. It was found in God’s presence—His guidance, His wisdom, and His power at work.
The same is true for us.
Just as a Resident learns from an Attending, we are apprentices of the ultimate Master, Jesus. And while He tells us that we will do greater things than He did, it’s not because we’ve merely read about Him, studied His ways, or even personally witnessed His work. It’s because He has sent the Holy Spirit to be with us and in us (John 14:17).
Are You Moving Without the Master?
It’s easy to rush into decisions, chase new opportunities, or start making plans without first asking, God, are You in this?
We’re naturally wired to move, to strive, to achieve—but are we making sure that every step is led by His presence? Or are we, like the Resident in Grey’s Anatomy, assuming that because we’ve seen God work before, we can handle things on our own?
If we truly believe that God’s presence is our greatest asset, then we should be echoing Moses’ prayer:
"Lord, if Your presence does not go with me, do not send me on from here…"
A Prayer for Moving Forward with God
Jesus, thank You for sending us an Advocate to guide us. Holy Spirit, thank You for Your presence. May we be so sensitive to Your leading that we move in step with You every day. In our planning, our decision-making, and our moving forward—let us go only with You. Reveal Yourself to us, that our lives might reflect Your glory. Amen.
Have you ever found yourself moving ahead without first seeking God’s presence? How did it turn out? What helps you stay in step with Him in your decisions and daily life?
Let’s talk in the comments—I’d love to hear your thoughts!
